Grommet hood sad for some, rad for others. Above is a heap of surfing footage of Jack Freestone surfing between the ages of 14 and 15 in and around his home town on the Gold Coast – Coolangatta. Jack and I filmed together almost every day in his younger years as Jack lived a stone throw away from my place, I had wheels he didn’t and we where both pumped to get the best we could down on film.
I still remember the first time I ever properly met Jack it was under the lifeguard tower at Snapper Rocks it was the afternoon and i saw this young grommet approaching me from up the beach, Jack said: ‘I think we should start filming some surfing” in an amped non confronting kind of way. Jack was always respectful and a good kid to hang with so in turn I had no problems filming and helping him get what he needed which was footage in order to help him fine tune his surfing. I was also working on my third surfing film at the time Lifesupport.
Jack Freestone has got his game face on and a serious disposition when it comes to competitive surfing. Who knows the World Junior champ may one day become the WCT champ, at this rate who can stop him!!! Watch the kid explode in the video above in pretty much every klip we got over his grommet hood years…
